Former Zimbabwe cricket team captain, Sean Williams has lost his contract with Zimbabwe Cricket because of his drug addiction. Recently, during a probe initiated by Zimbabwe cricket (ZC) regarding his repeated unavailability for the national cricket team, the veteran batsman disclosed that he is battling with drug abuse and had voluntarily entered a rehabilitation program. Although details about the substance involved have not been made public, Williams is reportedly working on his recovery.

Drug abuse severely impacts both physical and mental health, often leading to chemical dependency. This disrupts normal functioning, sometimes even making them unable to perform daily tasks. Rehabilitation centres are considered a trustworthy option for recovery as they provide assisted medication and psychological treatments. However, there is a significant gap in public awareness about when one should consider seeking rehabilitation.

Mr S Giriprasad, Psychologist, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru and Dr Pavitra Shankar, Associate Consultant – Psychiatry of Aakash healthcare, Delhi, highlight the role of rehabilitation and the key signs of when to consider it as an option.

Who Is Sean Williams And What Zimbabwe Cricket Said

The 39-year-old all-rounder, Sean Williams, suddenly withdrew from the squad on the eve of Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifiers in Harare in September, prompting an investigation from the Zimbabwe cricket board. During the inquiry, Williams himself disclosed that he has been struggling with drug abuse and had entered in rehabilitations

In an official statement, the governing body said, “After careful consideration, Zimbabwe Cricket has concluded that Williams will no longer be considered for national selection. ZC expects all contracted players to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and compliance with team protocols and anti-doping regulations.”

WIlliams’ international career spans more than 20 years, and he has played 273 matches across all formats. Zimbabwe cricket confirmed that his contract will not be renewed beyond the end of 2025.

    Adverse Effects of Drug Abuse

According to the Cleveland Clinic, people with drug addiction often have one or more associated health issues, which could include lung or heart disease, stroke, cancer, or mental health conditions.

Mr S Giriprasand shared, “Some of the physical effects of drug abuse are lack of energy, weak immune system, weight loss or gain, damage to the liver and kidneys, heart diseases, and increase in vulnerability to infections. After a prolonged period of drug use, an individual may suffer from organ failure or permanent neurological damage.“

He also highlighted the drastic psychosocial and behavioral changes, stating, “Usually these patients show increased anxiety, depression, irritability, mood swings, and, in some cases even psychosis.“

Discussing the substance’s impact on brain health, Dr Pavitra Shankar explained, “Drugs overload the brain’s reward system with dopamine, which forms intense pleasure that further encourages the addiction cycle. The persistent use rewires these channels, impairs the capacity to feel natural happiness and makes it hard to make decisions, recall information and to control impulses.”

    How Drug Rehabilitation Helps

Rehabilitation is an essential part of the recovery since it provides systematic treatment, medical attention, and psychological assistance.

Mr Girirprasad mentioned that rehabilitation gives the individual a clean, safe, and comforting atmosphere which is the primary requirement for successful change from dependence. “Simply stopping the use of drugs or doing this without a doctor’s supervision may result in serious complications and even a relapse of the addiction. Rehabilitation is a medical detox under the watchful eye of experts and minimises the unpleasant withdrawal symptoms,” he continued.

Explaining what kind of treatments and therapies provided in rehab centres, Mr Giriprasad said, “Help comes in many forms like therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), Motivational enhancement therapy(MET), support groups, and life skills training. This eventually helps the individuals regain their lost confidence and power over their life.”

Moreover, rehabilitation offers addicts a connection with others who have experienced similar situations and support from them aftercare, thus giving them a lower chance of relapse and future sobriety.

Key Signs That Rehabilitation Is Required

One of the most significant stages in the process of recovery is the ability to realise when it is time to seek rehabilitation. Mr Giriraprasad and Dr Shankar highlight the key symptoms and signs that indicate the need of rehab:

    • Loss of control: One of the biggest red flags is continuing to use drugs even after understanding how severely it is impacting their mental and physical health.
    • Tolerance formation: With time, individuals require an increasing amount of substances for the similar kind of reactions.
    • Withdrawal symptoms: Having physical or emotional suffering of tremors, mood swings, anxiety, or sleeplessness when trying to reduce or stop drug consumption are clear signs that rehab is needed.
    • Neglecting responsibilities: People tend to forget their duties and responsibilities either at the workplace, school or even in the family.
    • Isolation or secrecy: In several cases, people start to isolate themselves from their social groups and quit activities once they used to enjoy.
    • Deterioration of health: Significant weight changes, poor personal hygiene, or frequent illness are also key signs that professional help is required.
    • Emotional instability: Dependence over chemical substances causes emotional instability, irritation, lack of motivation or will power in the long run. Increasing mood swings, aggression, depression, or anxiety are also serious indicators.

    Bottomline

Rehabilitation is not only a possibility but a necessity when everyday life becomes based on the use of drug abuse, and the health, interpersonal and self-esteem begin to decline. Rehab offers medical advice, emotional support, and coordinated care, which offers people an opportunity to reestablish their lives in a dignified and stable manner.
