Finding it hard to break free from long-standing dependence on cigarettes or alcohol can feel overwhelming, but restoring a key nutrient inside the body may make the journey easier. According to insights shared by Dr Eric Berg on X, substance dependence such as nicotine, alcohol, and even drugs drains an essential compound within cells known as NAD. This molecule plays a central role in keeping the body and brain functioning smoothly.

Why NAD Matters to the Body and Brain

NAD is vital for generating cellular energy, maintaining healthy brain activity, and repairing damaged cells. When levels of this compound drop, the brain struggles to perform efficiently. This energy shortfall becomes especially noticeable during withdrawal, when nerve cells fail to meet their energy demands, intensifying discomfort and distress.

    How Low NAD Worsens Withdrawal

Insufficient NAD can amplify withdrawal symptoms, making the quitting phase far more challenging. People may experience constant tiredness, heightened irritability, persistent anxiety, restless sleep, and overpowering urges to return to the addictive substance. These effects can linger even after quitting, leaving individuals feeling drained and unwell despite staying substance-free.

    Signs of NAD Depletion

A shortage of NAD often shows up as ongoing exhaustion, muscle aches, unexplained weight gain, mental cloudiness, disturbed sleep patterns, and reduced physical endurance. These symptoms can slow recovery and make long-term abstinence harder to maintain.

Role of Vitamin B3 in Rebuilding NAD

Restoring NAD levels through diet alone is slow and often insufficient. The body relies on a building block called vitamin B3, also known as niacin, to replenish this compound. Niacin supports the nervous system during withdrawal and helps stabilize internal energy processes.

    Benefits of Therapeutic Niacin Intake

Research suggests that higher amounts of niacin can enhance energy production, support emotional balance, lessen cravings, and reduce the physical discomfort linked to withdrawal. This can significantly ease the transition away from addictive habits. The commonly suggested intake ranges between 1.5 and 3 grams per day, not milligrams. It is advisable to begin with a smaller amount and slowly increase the dose over one to two weeks while carefully observing how the body responds.

    Natural Ways to Increase NAD

Beyond supplementation, NAD levels can also be encouraged through lifestyle practices such as intermittent fasting, following a clean ketogenic-style diet, and engaging in regular physical activity. These habits strengthen mitochondrial health and improve overall energy, supporting recovery from addiction more effectively.Dr Eric Berg, D.C., is a prominent health educator, acclaimed author, and the founder of the Berg Institute of Health & Wellness.
