We can discover timeless lessons about resilience from looking at the world around us.

The trees, rivers and even the changing seasons provide us with lessons about resilience.

The mighty oak tree, open to the elements, learns to live with harsh winds and rain. The tree teaches us that resilience isn’t about never being shaken; it’s about having strong foundations (values, relationships, self-belief) and the flexibility to bend without breaking, when life tests us.

Resilience is less about force, and more about patience and persistence. How the river travels, how it bends and curves, reshaping the landscape, tells us that we can adapt too. Just like the water that flows, we must find new solutions and change course when life calls us to.

WriteWell’s Building Resilience course opens online October 4th. Amongst its many quotes, the course reminds us about the landscape of change – Resilience is not an end state of being, but rather a process of adaptation and growth within a risky landscape.

Metaphors can be wonderful to get inside an idea and explore. Is it the tree or the river that speaks to you? Consider which one fits your own idea of resilience. Write about it for 5 minutes without interruption. Notice how you feel afterwards. The cleansing benefits of putting thoughts to the page clears mental clutter and reduces anxiety.

The seasons also offer us a chance to look deeper within ourselves. This month’s writing Zoom, which is free to all subscribed members of WriteWell, matches the human personality to a season.

Are you bursting with energy like summer? Or a quiet, hopeful person like spring? Do you resemble the winter season, someone who enjoys their own company and is comfortable to hibernate? Autumn gives off an easy-going vibe, is that you?
