Punjab has taken a significant step in addressing mental health and substance abuse with the launch of a new Mental Health Fellowship program. The two-year fellowship aims to create a trained workforce capable of implementing prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation initiatives across the state.

The program, a collaboration between AIIMS Mohali and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Mumbai, will select 35 young professionals with backgrounds in psychology or social work. These fellows will gain hands-on experience in working with communities, schools, colleges, and rehabilitation centers to tackle the challenges posed by substance abuse.

The initiative reflects a broader approach to substance abuse, emphasizing the role of trained specialists in mental health rather than relying solely on enforcement measures. Fellows will receive structured training and mentorship from TISS Mumbai, equipping them with leadership and practical skills to support communities effectively. The program also offers a monthly stipend of ₹60,000 to ensure that participants can fully dedicate themselves to the work without financial concerns.

Fellows are expected to engage directly with communities, identifying at-risk individuals, supporting treatment efforts, and facilitating rehabilitation programs. By integrating prevention, intervention, and recovery, the program aims to provide a comprehensive model that could serve as a benchmark for similar initiatives across India.

Applications for the fellowship are open until December 7, 2025, and interested candidates can apply through the official TISS website. Organizers emphasize that this initiative is not just a training program but an investment in the future of Punjab’s youth and families, aiming to strengthen community mental health and reduce the impact of substance abuse.

Experts note that addressing substance abuse through mental health-focused strategies is crucial for long-term community wellbeing. By combining training, mentorship, and practical experience, Punjab’s fellowship initiative seeks to create a sustainable model for supporting vulnerable populations and fostering healthier communities.

This program represents a step towards integrating scientific approaches to mental health with community-based interventions, potentially serving as a model for other states and regions facing similar challenges.
