The Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation has recognized the addictions counselling program at Medicine Hat College as an approved program.

The college announced Monday that approval from the CACCF is a significant milestone for the long-term sustainability of the two-year program, which prepares students for a career in the addictions field by developing skills in assessment, treatment, prevention and relapse.

“This approval demonstrates that our addictions counselling program has a strong foundation to build upon, and the recognition allows us to focus on evolution through deeper engagement with partners and communities,” said Jason Openo, dean of the Yuill School of Health & Community Services. “Now that we have CACCF approval, we are also in a better position to develop university partnerships, which we are actively pursuing.”

The CACCF aims to ensure quality standards in addiction counselling, and the approval ensures the program is providing students resources, certification opportunities and training for those who aspire to work in the addictions health field.

Openo says an addictions counselling diploma is essential to southeast Alberta to address the region’s growing mental health and substance use challenges.

“This year, our second-year addictions counselling students will be completing their practicums in community organizations, health-care settings, schools and residential programs, and we will be getting feedback from our partners and students on the community impact of the program.”

Approval by the CACCF is effective for five years and is the second industry approval received this year by a program in the Yuill School of Health & Community Services.

Back in the spring, MHC was recognized for its practical nurse diploma by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta, which is also in effect for five years until 2030.
