Michael Douglas got real about the difficult conversation he had with the late Rob Reiner regarding their children’s drug addiction. Over a week after the filmmaker and his wife, Michele Reiner, were found dead in their Los Angeles home, the 81-year-old actor and film producer has opened up about the challenges they faced as fathers.
Michael shared how he and Rob bonded over the pain and uncertainty of trying to help a child in the grip of addiction during his appearance on the CBS News special Rob Reiner: Scenes from a Life. The episode aired on Sunday, December 21. “With this terrible tragedy, we’re realising how much pressure he was dealing with in his personal life with his son,” he said.
Michael Douglas Shared Rob Reiner Gave His Best At Work Despite Personal Challenges
Recalling his own ordeal with his son Cameron Douglas, the Wall Street actor added, “I also had a son who had drug issues. And I’m happy to say he’s overcome them and he’s living a prosperous life. But we talked a lot about that: What you can do as a parent, what you can’t do.” Despite the hardships that Rob faced in his personal life, Michael mentioned that the director always gave one hundred per cent to his work. The duo worked together on The American President (1995) and And So It Goes (2014).
Rob Reiner’s Son Nick Reiner Has Been Arrested In Connection Of His Parents’ Death
The revelation came after the devastating tragedy for the Reiner family, where Rob and his wife, Michele, were found dead in their home on December 14. Their daughter, Romy Reiner, who lives nearby, found them, and paramedics rushed to the home. According to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, the couple was fatally stabbed. Their 32-year-old son, Nick, was arrested later that day and is currently being held without bail. He has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their deaths.
Nick had reportedly struggled with addiction for years and had been in and out of rehab since his teenage years. Despite the challenges, a source told People that the Reiners never stopped trying to help their son and never gave up hope. In September this year, the late filmmaker told NPR that Nick had been sober for more than six years and was “in a really good place.”
He shared, “I was more hands-on and trying to do whatever I thought I could do to help. I’m sure I made mistakes and, you know, I’ve talked about that with him since.”
