The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Mary Cosby is speaking openly about her son Robert Jr.’s recent arrest and his struggles with addiction. The 22-year-old was arrested outside Salt Lake City on September 6 after police responded to a domestic violence report.

According to reports, Robert Jr. was accused of trying to break into his father-in-law’s home by climbing through a dog door. He was also accused of assaulting someone outside before being arrested. Mary later told PEOPLE that she believes the arrest might help her son learn important lessons about his choices.

“It was for his good,” Mary said. “I think he needed that. He’s never encountered anything like that. It hurt me at the time, but some things happen for a reason to show you the path you’re on.”

Mary shared that although the arrest was painful, she now sees it as something that could help Robert Jr. make better decisions.

“I was devastated, I was worried, I was scared,” she said. “But I feel like he understands that that’s the wrong journey.”

Robert Jr. told PEOPLE he is taking life “day by day.”

He added, “I’m not where I want to be, but I’m certainly not where I used to be. I will get there.” Mary believes his time apart from his wife Alexiana has also helped him refocus. “She’s out of our house now, so they snuck out to be together and got caught,” she said.

Mary also mentioned that she doesn’t believe the marriage between Robert Jr. and Alexiana is legal.

“I still don’t believe she’s his wife,” she said. “They said that the marriage license is in a safe, and they lost the key. They’re toxic together.”

Despite her concerns, Mary sees her son’s arrest as a turning point.

“It became a blessing in disguise,” she said.

Robert Jr.’s addiction journey and Mary Cosby’s support

Robert Jr. first revealed his drug addiction during the previous season of RHOSLC. He admitted to using heroin, Xanax, acid, Molly, cocaine, and OxyContin. Mary Cosby said she learned about it only after receiving messages from people who told her about his drug use.

“At first I was just clueless,” she recalled. “I just decided to ask him, ‘What is going on?’” That was when Robert Jr. opened up to her on camera for the first time. “We were in his room, and he told me the truth,” Mary said. “I didn’t judge him. I respected it. When you hide something, you don’t want to change it.”

Mary Cosby said their conversation brought them closer.

“The fact that he told me and he admitted it, that is touching,” she said. “It breaks you down, and it makes me love him even more.” She also spoke about letting go of guilt. “I can only control myself, and my kid has to control himself. That’s on him. The only thing I can do is be supportive and encourage him to stop.”
