Sometimes doing nothing about a family member’s active addiction is doing more.
Later in the journey we expect that they will have a better understanding of the “system” (e.g. recovery options, sober homes, networks, meetings) and we let them begin to help themselves to their own recovery.
For me the “chess game” of addiction began to change when I stopped compromising my life and only collaborated with the times that my son sought to get sober.
It was interesting to get the responses (one verbal and one in comments ) regarding my comments on the pharmaceutical industry funding of a “recovery site”. Both addicts ( one sober for approximately a year , the other according to his blog is active in addiction ) felt that they were responsible for the drug [...]
I watched others go through the endless cycle and decided that “clean underwear did not equate to love” I loved my child but felt he had to bottom out and understand that I would not be their to “powder his butt” forever.
