I Can Only Fix Me
- Elaine Altman-Eller (for her sons)

I kicked, I screamed,
I denied, I demanded.
I cried, I yelled,
I lost control.
I swore, I begged,
I lost sleep; I couldn’t get out of bed.
I fixed things,
Tried to control you,
Lost control of myself,
Ran to you, ran from you.
Gave to you, took from you,
Lost you; lost myself.
Gave in, gave up,
Lost faith, lost hope.
Began my own journey of healing,
Found myself, regained my strength,
Let go, let God.
Restored my self-esteem,
Learned about me,
Learned about you.
Stopped the anger, the bargaining,
Emerged from the depression,
Began to accept.
Learned about patience, forgiveness,
Self preservation.
Waiting for you,
Is all I can do.
I am here, when you are ready,
Arms open, heart intact,
Strong enough for both of us.
I care, but I won’t take care,
I won’t take from you what you cannot give.
But I won’t compromise on what I believe is true,
I can only fix me, and you must fix you!!
